The Alice in Wonderland theme was used for the dedication because a fireplace in the building was uncovered that uses ceramic tiles featuring the Alice in Wonderland characters and now the fireplace is a central part of the new library. The Lincoln Center, a drop-in recreational center and cultural center for blacks, was located at Logan and William streets. It closed in 1969.
