Peter Jok serving four-day jail sentence

Iowa basketball player Peter Jok has begun serving a four-day jail sentence as part of his punishment for two legal incidents that occurred while riding his moped.

Jok, who recently pleaded guilty to driving while his license was revoked, was booked Thursday afternoon at the Johnson County and is scheduled to be released Monday.

His lawyer, Randy Larson, said the jail sentence is a result of a contempt of court offense Jok received after being arrested for driving while his license was revoked, which violated his probation from a drunken driving charge this spring.

Larson said Jok was sentenced to pay a mandatory minimum fine of $1,000, as well as a 35 percent surcharge and court costs.

"He's just going to take his medicine and be ready to face the season and the school year," Larson said. "I think he's just one of those kids that maybe needs to grow up a little bit, but I don't think he has a bad bone in his body or anything. I think he's great kid who just didn't think a few times."

In a statement released this afternoon by University of Iowa media relations associate director Matt Weitzel:

"Coach McCaffery and the administration are aware of the legal obligations that Peter Jok has been ordered to fulfill by the court in regards to this summer's incidents. Nothing has changed in regards to Peter's status with the team. He rejoined the team the first week of school after completing the team obligations that he needed to during his suspension. This decision completes his legal requirements."

Jok, 20, a former all-state player at West Des Moines Valley, pleaded guilty to OWI in Johnson County Court on May 2 after an April 26 arrest. Jok, whose legal name is Kacoul Dut Jok, was stopped July 14 by police while riding his moped while his license was revoked in Iowa City.

According to online court records, Jok pleaded guilty Sept. 11 to driving while his license was revoked. He had originally pleaded not guilty in July.

Jok, a sophomore guard, played in 27 games and averaged 4.4 points per game last season for the Hawkeyes.
