Recap: Iowa football trounced, 42-3, in Big Ten title game against Michigan

Championship Saturday has finally arrived.

No. 12 Iowa (10-2) will play for a Big Ten title against No. 3 Michigan (11-1) at 7:17 p.m. (CT) inside Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The Hawkeyes can clinch a Rose Bowl berth and the first outright conference title under Kirk Ferentz with a win. An Iowa stunner would also knock the Wolverines out of the College Football Playoff picture.

Michigan trying to find the end zone once more.

Iowa gets a punt blocked. Michigan inside the 10 now.

Wolverines should just play defense the rest of the game. Easy win.

1:10/4Q — A lot of yards, but no points on Alex Padilla's first drive.

Hawkeyes stall out in the red zone again after moving 60 yards. A field goal technically would've put Iowa down two scores rather than three, but scoring a TD was really the only option to actually stay in the game. We're pretty close to done here.

8:23/3Q — Michigan 21, Iowa 3

Too easy for the Wolverines. 10 plays, 82 yards, 5:04 time elapsed. Hassan Haskins finishes it with a 4-yard TD run. Here comes Alex Padilla.

10:20/3Q — Looks like Iowa is making a change under center.

13:27/3Q — One first down, then a wall.

Iowa is punting again. Shocker.

HALF — Michigan 14, Iowa 3

Iowa's defense has tightened up after surrendering the big plays. But Iowa's offense has done nothing. Caleb Shudak's miss prevents this from technically being a one-score game. Hawkeyes get the ball out of half.

1:21/2Q — No QB change as Iowa's defense makes another stop

Spencer Petras still in the game despite taking a big hit on the non-targeting call. Iowa's defense lets Michigan get around midfield before stiffening up.

5:00/2Q — We've done this before.

Iowa defense gets a stop, Iowa's offense does nothing with great field position, Tory Taylor backs Michigan up. Then repeat.

9:08/2Q — Rinse and repeat for Iowa's offense

One first down, then three plays that go nowhere, then a punt. Michigan is backed up but does it really matter if the Hawkeyes can't find some offensive life?

11:03/2Q — Iowa defense finds some footing.

Three and out after Tory Taylor backed the Michigan offense up deep. Charlie Jones loses seven on the punt return, but then picks up a first down on the first play. Hawkeyes into Michigan territory.

END 1Q — Jack Campbell gives Iowa its first break.

Tipped pass goes right into the linebacker's hand. But the Hawkeyes are quickly in third-and-long as the quarter ends. Have to do something with this gift. That's Iowa's 23rd interception this season, tying a school record.

1:26/1Q — Michigan 14, Iowa 3

Iowa gets on the board, but that still feels like a win for Michigan. Nice offensive movement, with keys hookups to Sam LaPorta and Charlie Jones, fizzles out once the Hawkeyes get goal-to-go. Caleb Shudak drills the 22-yard attempt.

5:27/1Q — Michigan 14, Iowa 0.

Iowa's halfback pass didn't work. Michigan's did, big time. Donovan Edwards to Roman Wilson for a 75-yard TD. That's 142 yards on Michigan's last two plays. Iowa climbing uphill early.

6:00/1Q — Iowa's second drive is much more unsuccessful.

A three-and-out. Two passes that had no chance of working, plus another short Tyler Goodson run. He already has seven carries but for just 12 yards. Wolverines about to get the ball back again.

6:38/1Q — Michigan 7, Iowa 0.

Well, that didn't take long. Michigan quickly cashes in the Iowa missed FG on Blake Corum's 67-yard TD run. Quarterback Cade McNamara with great blocking effort downfield Not a great time for Iowa to allow its longest run of the year.

Iowa already with adversity to hurdle.

8:35/1Q — Hawkeyes waste a great opening drive.

Oh how close Iowa was to landing an early blow. Halfback pass from Gavin Williams to Monte Pottebaum is just long. But disaster follows. Tyler Goodson hit for a big loss on third-and-3, then Caleb Shudak misses a chip shot. Haven't seen that much this year from the reliable kicker.

Michigan takes over at its own 20.

10:55/1Q — First down to Sam LaPorta, then a big PI.

Couple of early conversions for the Hawkeyes. Iowa into Michigan territory. Still struggling to get Tyler Goodson going.

13:45/1Q — Riley Moss makes the first big Iowa play of the night.

Hassan Haskins stopped on third-and-short thanks to a great play by the former Ankeny Centennial standout. Spencer Petras on the field now.

7:17 p.m. — Iowa wins the toss, defers.

Hawkeyes will put their defense on the field first. Kick next.

With Michigan playing for a playoff berth, the Wolverines unsurprisingly dominated much of the pregame talk on FOX. Charles Woodson doesn't hide his Michigan roots, but Iowa did get a pick from former Hawkeyes standout Bob Stoops. Big E showing Iowa love on the broadcast too.
